Backwashing reverses the flow through a sand filter and carries trapped dirt to waste. It is a cleaning process for the filter media, not a cure for every cloudy pool.
When backwashing is relevant
A rise in filter pressure can show that dirt is restricting flow. Weak return flow and a pump that sounds strained point in the same direction. The clean pressure for that system is a better reference than a fixed calendar.
Protect the valve and pump
The pump should be off before the multiport valve is moved. The valve needs to sit fully in its selected position. Starting the pump while the handle is between settings can damage the seal inside the valve.
Drainage matters
Backwash water carries sanitiser and dirt. It needs a suitable discharge route rather than a connection to a storm drain or an area where it can wash soil back toward the pool.
When backwashing is not enough
Old filter media can channel, clump or lose its ability to trap fine debris. A damaged lateral can send media into the pool. In those cases, backwashing does not solve the underlying filter repair.
What to check before work starts
The existing pool or room should be inspected as a complete system. Visible damage may sit beside a separate problem in the pipework, controls, waterproofing or ventilation. A written scope should identify the affected parts and state which surrounding surfaces need protection or opening.
Repair work should protect the surrounding deck and garden while the fault is opened. The scope also needs to state whether the finish is being patched or removed back to a sound background.
