Surface cracks
Fine hairline cracking in the plaster or render, often in a map pattern. This is shrinkage in the finish rather than the structure. It does not leak on its own and it is cosmetic.
Fixed during the next resurfacing.
Structural cracks
Cracks through the concrete shell. Signs that a crack is structural:
- It runs through the tile as well as the grout
- It is wider at one end than the other
- Water level drops to the crack line and stops
- Tile on either side sits at different heights
These need proper repair, not filler. The method depends on the cause.
Repair methods
Epoxy injection restores structural continuity because cured epoxy is stronger than the surrounding concrete.
Active crack, still moving: injection alone will fail again. The crack needs a flexible joint detail, or the underlying cause needs fixing first.
Causes worth investigating
- Ground movement under the pool, often from a leak washing out the bedding
- Hydrostatic uplift where a pool was drained with high groundwater and no relief valve
- Inadequate reinforcement in the original build
- Poor compaction of backfill against the walls
If a pool cracks once and is repaired without addressing the cause, it cracks again.

A visible fault is often the last part of the problem. Pool repair should trace the issue back through the fitting, pipework, shell or plant. Replacing the obvious part without checking the cause can leave the same fault in place.
What to check before work starts
The existing pool or room should be inspected as a complete system. Visible damage may sit beside a separate problem in the pipework, controls, waterproofing or ventilation. A written scope should identify the affected parts and state which surrounding surfaces need protection or opening.
Repair work should protect the surrounding deck and garden while the fault is opened. The scope also needs to state whether the finish is being patched or removed back to a sound background.
